Mental health is a health issue that affects the way one talks,behave,mood and the way people perceive things. Mental health issues range from mild ones to severe ones that can last for years.
The causes of mental health issues in Namibia are multifaceted. Factors contributing to mental illnesses in Namibia include the abuse of illicit drugs and alcohol, chronic infections, socio-economic challenges, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The prevalence of mental illnesses in Namibia is estimated at 25.6% and is expected to double by 2030. Additionally, stress, mental health issues, isolation, grief, economic hardships, fear of infection, and lack of proper mental health support are significant contributors to the mental health challenges faced in the country.
Furthermore, the abuse of prescription pain pills, such as opioids, has also been highlighted as a concerning issue. Moreover, challenges like gender-based violence, child neglect, and high suicide rates, particularly among men, further compound the mental health landscape in Namibia.
In addition, mental disorders like autism, ADHD, bipolar disorder, major depression, and schizophrenia are strongly influenced by genetics. Genes play a vital role in mental health suscectability, environmental, and societal factors also influence the development of this disorder.
Excessive alcohol and drug abuse can also lead to mental illnesses. Drugs such as cocaine and Marijuana contain a substance called paranoia that affects the functioning of the brain.
There are many different factors that contribute to mental health disorders, including substance abuse, genetics, childhood trauma and environmental ones. To lessen the toll that mental diseases takes on both people and society, mental health promotion and prevention initiatives are essential.
