First of all you should know the type of mental illness the person you are caring for has. Knowing and understanding the illness helps you to provide the necessary and appropriate support.
These people need to be supported, it can be either physically or emotionally. Offer empathy and encouragement to them. This helps to make them feel loved and valued.
If you feel you are struggling with helping them , than seek support. You can ask your family members, friends, or mental health professionals to provide you with guidance. Take care of yourself and interact with your friends and family as caring for mentally ill people sometimes affects your mental health.
